This large model of a Maori War Canoe ( Waka Taua) is beautifully carved right here in New Zealand.
These wonderful craft can be viewed at several marae around the country. They look spectacular, and were traditionally paddled by up to 100 warriors.
The prow (ihu), stern-post (taurapa) and side panels of the canoe were beautifully carved and featured designs and styles particular to each tribe.
This Maori war canoe is also beautifully carved, and inlaid with New Zealand Paua shell. It measures approximately 57cm (22 1/2') long and is proudly carved in Rotorua, New Zealand. It is made from Tulip Wood, a sustainable hardwood that is relatively light in weight. Perfect for carving.
A waka taua makes a wonderful souvenir of a holiday in New Zealand and an excellent presentation piece. Fabulous trophy too!
